We suggest you go to this museum, but be cognizant of the conservative view regarding whether women have the human right to control their bodies as they choose.
When you investigate the owner of the museum, Carol Crossed, you find she is an anti-choice (pro-life activist). This can easily make one conclude that she is using the legacy of Susan B Anthony to make it appear that women in that time were unanimously opposed to abortion. Thus simply is not the case and the museum comes across as dishonest for trying to connect the two together.
Could have been better, but the displays we're informative.
It was disappointing that the rooms weren't furnished with more period pieces but instead walls covered with information for visitors to read about SBA. On our visit most of the rooms were blocked with people reading the many walls.
Susan Anthony was/is a seminal character in American history and universal human rights. Were it not for her and her contemporaries American women could still be ruled by a patriarchal conservative, Right-wing mentality. This museum is significant in that it tells this story of women struggling to attain the same rights as men had.
Great place very child-friendly
One of the disappointing things about the museum, however, is the anti-abortion, anti-choice (pro-life) stance the owner and trustees of the museum take in discussing the early women's movement. They clearly imply through their displays that most women in Susan's time were pro-life, anti-choice about pregnancy. This simply was not, and is not today, the case. Most women then and now want access to contraception, and safe and legal medical abortion services if they choose this option. In short, it is a woman's body and it is their choice. The museum needs to present a balanced view of this issue if they are going to address the topic. Otherwise, they are engaging in propaganda.
We had a private tour since we were the only ones there. It gave our 13 yr old daughter some perspective in that voting rights for women were not won 250 years ago, but by women in my grandmothers time.
